Service land refers to land that is granted or held by an individual in consideration of rendering certain services, typically to the village community or the government. Historically, this system was prevalent in many parts of India, including Madhya Pradesh, as a means to ensure the performance of essential services without direct monetary payment.

1. Purpose: The primary purpose of granting service land was to remunerate individuals for specific duties. Examples include lands held by village watchmen (chowkidars), priests (pujaris), blacksmiths, carpenters, barbers, or other village functionaries who provided services vital to the community's functioning.
2. Nature of Tenure: The tenure of service land was often conditional. The holder's right to the land was contingent upon the satisfactory performance of the designated service. If the service was not rendered, or if the post was abolished, the land could be resumed by the State or the grantor.
3. Inalienability: Service lands were typically inalienable and non-transferable. The holder could not sell, mortgage, or gift the land, as it was tied to the service rather than being a personal property right in the conventional sense. This restriction prevented the fragmentation or alienation of lands meant for public service.
4. Resumption: The government or the appropriate authority had the power to resume service land if the service was discontinued, the holder failed to perform the service, or the need for the service ceased.

In modern times, many service tenures have been abolished or converted into regular Bhumiswami (proprietary) rights under land reforms legislation, including the M.P. Land Revenue Code. This conversion often involved the payment of a premium by the service landholder to acquire full ownership rights. However, the concept remains historically significant in understanding traditional land administration and community service structures.
