Ziauddin Barani’s treatise is an idealized political manifesto rather than an objective historical account. Disillusioned by social fluidity and the inclusion of low-born converts and non-Muslims in imperial administration, Barani wrote a bitter lament advising rulers to preserve aristocratic noble monopoly (ashraf) and enforce strict orthodox statecraft.
