Gana-sanghas (republics) emerged on the Gangetic periphery as an egalitarian alternative to centralizing Later Vedic monarchies dominated by Brahmanical orthodoxy and hereditary kingship. Driven by Kshatriya clans resisting ritual subordination, they instituted corporate decision-making via assemblies (Santhagara), rejected sacrificial violence, and preserved clan-based landholding and collective sovereignty.
