- Varahamihira (c. 505–587 CE): A renowned astronomer, astrologer, and mathematician, he authored Pancha Siddhantika, a compilation of five astronomical treatises. His work covered various aspects of mathematical astronomy, including planetary movements, eclipses, and the calculation of time.
2. Mathematics:
- Decimal System and Zero: The Gupta period saw the full development and widespread use of the decimal place-value system, including the concept of zero. This revolutionary system, which allowed for complex calculations and laid the groundwork for modern mathematics, was transmitted to the Arab world and subsequently to Europe.
- Aryabhata: Beyond astronomy, Aryabhata made profound contributions to mathematics. He introduced trigonometry (sine tables), algebra, and quadratic equations. He also calculated the value of Pi (π) to four decimal places (3.1416), which was highly accurate for his time.

3. Medicine (Ayurveda):
- While the foundational texts of Ayurveda, Charaka Samhita (medicine) and Sushruta Samhita (surgery), were compiled earlier, medical knowledge continued to flourish. Physicians and surgeons of the Gupta era refined existing practices.
- Sushruta, often called the 'Father of Surgery', described complex surgical procedures, including rhinoplasty (plastic surgery of the nose), cataract operations, and the use of various surgical instruments. His work detailed over 300 surgical procedures and 120 surgical instruments.
- Veterinary Science: Significant progress was also made in veterinary medicine, particularly in treating diseases of horses and elephants, which were crucial for warfare and transportation.
4. Metallurgy:
- The Gupta period showcased exceptional metallurgical skills. The Iron Pillar of Delhi, erected during this era, stands as a testament to their advanced knowledge. Made of 99% pure wrought iron, it has resisted corrosion for over 1600 years, indicating sophisticated understanding of rust-resistant alloys and forging techniques.
- Mastery in casting metals was also evident in the creation of large copper statues, such as the Sultanganj Buddha, which is a magnificent example of metal craftsmanship.
5. Other Technologies:
- Hydraulics and Water Management: Advanced irrigation systems, including canals, wells, and reservoirs, were developed to support agriculture.
- Ceramics and Pottery: High-quality pottery and terracotta artifacts were produced, demonstrating skilled craftsmanship.
- Textiles: The production of fine cotton and silk textiles was a significant industry.
