Temperate cyclones, also known as extra-tropical cyclones or mid-latitude cyclones, are large-scale weather systems that form in the middle latitudes (typically between 30° and 65° North and South of the equator). Unlike tropical cyclones, they derive their energy from the horizontal temperature differences between contrasting air masses (warm and cold) along a front. They are characterized by a low-pressure center, with winds spiraling inwards in an anti-clockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere. These cyclones are associated with distinct warm, cold, and occluded fronts, bringing widespread cloudiness, precipitation (rain or snow), and moderate winds over a large area. They typically move from west to east, guided by the Westerlies.
Impact on India: In India, temperate cyclones are primarily experienced as Western Disturbances (WDs). These are extra-tropical storm systems originating in the Mediterranean region that bring sudden winter rain and snow to the northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent.
- Winter Precipitation: WDs are crucial for winter rainfall in the plains of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan, and snowfall in the Himalayan regions (Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand). This precipitation is vital for the successful cultivation of rabi crops, particularly wheat, which is a staple food crop.
- Water Resources: Snowfall in the Himalayas contributes significantly to the perennial flow of rivers, which are a major source of irrigation and hydroelectric power.
- Temperature Regulation: WDs can cause a sudden drop in temperature, leading to cold waves, but also provide relief from prolonged dry spells.
- Adverse Effects: While generally beneficial, intense WDs can cause heavy snowfall, leading to avalanches, road blockages, and disruption of normal life in the mountainous regions. Heavy rains in the plains can sometimes damage standing crops if accompanied by hailstorms.
