India is a country with significant seismic activity, making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes. This vulnerability stems primarily from its unique geological setting, particularly the ongoing collision of the Indian tectonic plate with the Eurasian plate, which has led to the formation of the Himalayas. To assess and manage earthquake risk, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has classified India into different seismic zones based on the expected intensity of earthquakes.
Understanding Seismic Zones: Seismic zones categorize regions based on their likelihood of experiencing earthquakes and the potential intensity of ground shaking. The BIS classification (IS 1893: Part 1, 2002) divides India into four seismic zones, ranging from Zone II (least active) to Zone V (most active). Previously, there were five zones, but Zones I and II were merged.
The Four Seismic Zones of India:

Zone V (Very High Damage Risk Zone):
- This zone is the most seismically active and prone to earthquakes of the highest intensity (MSK IX or greater). It covers regions with a high risk of severe damage.
- Regions: The entire Northeastern India (including states like Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh), parts of Jammu & Kashmir (Kashmir Valley), Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
- Reason: These areas are located in the active collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian plates or are influenced by major fault lines.

Zone IV (High Damage Risk Zone):
- This zone is susceptible to earthquakes of high intensity (MSK VIII). It includes areas that have experienced significant seismic activity in the past.
- Regions: The remaining parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, parts of northern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, the National Capital Region (Delhi), parts of Gujarat (including areas around the Gulf of Khambhat), and parts of Maharashtra (like the Latur region, which experienced a devastating earthquake).
- Reason: These regions are either close to the Himalayan seismic belt or have active fault systems within the Peninsular Shield.

Zone III (Moderate Damage Risk Zone):
- This zone is characterized by moderate seismic activity, with the potential for earthquakes of intensity MSK VII.
- Regions: Most parts of Peninsular India, including parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and some coastal areas.
- Reason: While generally considered more stable, the Peninsular Shield is not entirely free from seismic activity, with intra-plate earthquakes occurring along ancient fault lines.

Zone II (Low Damage Risk Zone):
- This is the least seismically active zone, with the lowest probability of experiencing significant earthquakes (MSK VI or less).
- Regions: The remaining parts of the country, primarily the stable continental interior, which are not covered by the higher zones.
- Reason: These areas are relatively stable tectonic blocks with minimal active faulting.
Importance of Seismic Zoning: Seismic zoning is crucial for urban planning, building codes, and disaster preparedness. It helps engineers design earthquake-resistant structures appropriate for the seismic risk of a particular region, informs land-use planning, and guides public awareness and emergency response strategies to minimize loss of life and property during seismic events. Given India's high population density and rapid urbanization, adherence to these zones is paramount for building a resilient infrastructure.
