Avoidance relationships involve strict rules that limit direct interaction, conversation, or even physical proximity between certain relatives. For instance, in some cultures, a son-in-law might avoid direct eye contact or conversation with his mother-in-law, or siblings of opposite sexes might maintain distance after puberty. These relationships typically signify respect, hierarchy, or the need to prevent potential conflict or inappropriate behavior. Critically, avoidance can reinforce social stratification, gender roles, and the authority of elders or specific kin groups, sometimes at the expense of individual expression or closer familial bonds.

Joking relationships, conversely, permit or even encourage teasing, banter, and informal behavior between specific relatives. Examples include relationships between grandparents and grandchildren, or cross-cousins. These interactions often serve as a social safety valve, allowing for the release of tension, reinforcing solidarity, and sometimes even facilitating courtship or marriage arrangements. From a critical standpoint, while appearing informal, joking relationships are also highly structured. They define who can joke with whom, and the nature of the jokes, thereby subtly reinforcing social boundaries and acceptable forms of interaction.
