River water transport, or inland waterways, has a long history in India, serving as a traditional mode of transport for goods and people. In recent decades, there has been a renewed focus on developing this sector due to its cost-effectiveness, fuel efficiency, and eco-friendliness compared to road and rail transport. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), established in 1986, is the nodal agency for the development and regulation of inland waterways for shipping and navigation.
India has a vast network of navigable rivers, canals, backwaters, and creeks, totaling about 14,500 km. Of this, approximately 5,200 km of major rivers and 4,000 km of canals are navigable by mechanized vessels. The government has declared 111 waterways as National Waterways (NWs) to systematically develop them. Key operational NWs include NW-1 (Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system), NW-2 (Brahmaputra river), NW-3 (West Coast Canal), NW-4 (Krishna and Godavari rivers), and NW-5 (Brahmani and Mahanadi rivers).
River water transport plays a crucial role in regional development by:
- Reducing Transportation Costs: It offers a cheaper alternative for bulk cargo movement, such as coal, cement, food grains, and fertilizers, which benefits industries and consumers in the hinterland.
- Enhancing Connectivity: It connects remote and landlocked regions to major ports and industrial centers, fostering economic integration and trade.

Despite its potential, challenges like seasonal water level fluctuations, inadequate infrastructure (terminals, navigation aids), and competition from other modes of transport persist. Ongoing projects like the Jal Marg Vikas Project on NW-1 aim to address these issues, further unlocking the potential of inland waterways for India's regional development.
