Seismic hazard zones of India
India, due to its unique geological setting, particularly the collision of the Indian plate with the Eurasian plate, is highly susceptible to seismic activity. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has classified India into four seismic zones (Zone II, III, IV, and V) based on the expected intensity of earthquakes. Zone V is the most seismically active, while Zone II is the least.
Zone V (Very High Damage Risk Zone): This zone covers the entire northeastern India, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, and parts of North Bihar. These regions are prone to earthquakes of magnitude 8 or higher.
Zone IV (High Damage Risk Zone): This zone includes the remaining parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, parts of Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, parts of Gujarat, and small portions of Maharashtra near the west coast. Earthquakes of magnitude 7-7.9 can occur here.
Zone III (Moderate Damage Risk Zone): This zone covers a large part of the country, including parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Moderate earthquakes (magnitude 6-6.9) are expected.
Zone II (Low Damage Risk Zone): This zone covers the stable continental interior parts of the country, primarily the Deccan Plateau. While considered low risk, minor tremors can still occur.
